Since purchasing my first DSLR, I've checked out just about every photography book our county library has to offer. In my search for THE book, I found some too elementary and some too abstruse. For me Digital Photo Manual hits the sweet spot and is perfect for me. For those who are seasoned photographers and those who are comfortable using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, there may not be much here for you to learn.
The Book
There are seven chapters, a glossary, and a list of useful contacts. The book is well laid out with numerous example photographs, sidebars and captions. A reader is not overwhelmed by a sea of endless, uninterrupted text.
The first three chapters deal with camera types, lenses and essential accessories. I especially like the fourth chapter which explains camera basics and how to use all that your SLR has to offer. I can't read enough about aperture myself.
In the fifth chapter the reader learns about post processing using Photoshop or Photoshop Essentials. For someone like me who's just getting his feet wet with Elements, this chapter couldn't be handier. The tutorials are easy to follow with many helpful visuals.
Inspirational Photography in chapter 6 is for those who are ready to use their newfound knowledge with things like texture, self portraits, multiple exposure, flash, dodge and burn, and many other topics.
The last chapter deals with RAW imaging, what it is and what to do with thise RAW files once you've captured them. Again for someone who's unfamiliar with RAW, this chapter can be a just what the doctor ordered.
If I were to buy one photography book to keep on my shelf for ready reference and review, this would be it. The advanced photographer won't find it as useful.
